When France sided with the American rebels exactly 240 years ago, the American War of Independence soon spread across the Atlantic. France and her ally Spain terrified the West Country with a huge invasion fleet, while Spanish forces began besieging the fortress of Gibraltar. Lasting over three and a half years, it became the longest siege in British history.

Devon writers, Roy and Lesley Adkins, are historians and authors, whose books include Trafalgar, Jack Tar and Eavesdropping on Jane Austen’s England. In their widely acclaimed new book, Gibraltar: The Greatest Siege in British History, they bring to life the epic struggle in which thousands of soldiers, sailors, civilians and their families were involved.

The extraordinary events led to Gibraltar becoming the most famous fortress in the world and a symbol of strength and stability.
