Onjali Raúf visits Exmouth Community College and King’s School Ottery St Mary
Posted on 27th November 2024
Onjali Raúf's work is informed in part by her British Bangladeshi heritage and experiences of racism in childhood. “When I started being called Paki, I started to feel [my difference]. I wondered: why is there no one who looks like me in the books? So I wanted to write those characters.”
She has since published several award winning books for children.
In 2019, Onjali won the Waterstone’s Children’s Book Prize and the Blue Peter Book Award. Her first book The Boy at the Back of the Class was a Sunday Times Best Seller.
In total, just under 1000 children enjoyed the visits.
“Thank you so much for bringing Onjali to visit us yesterday! I have had so much positive feedback from students and staff, it’s been quite overwhelming!” Jess Chatfield, English Link at King’s School Ottery St Mary
“Onjali was not an author the school have used in the past but she will be after such a great event.” Ed Thomas, Littleham Primary School
