Jonathan Freedland

The Escape Artist: The Man Who Broke Out of Auschwitz to Warn the World

Venue: St Peter’s Church

17 September 2022 2:00 pm

The Guardian columnist, AKA bestselling author Sam Bourne, turns his skills to the true and little known story of two Jewish inmates who broke out of Auschwitz and alerted the world to the horrors of the Holocaust. Freedland’s riveting account tells of Rudolf Vrba and Fred Wetzler who negotiated electrified fences and armed watchtowers, evading thousands of SS men and dogs, before trekking across marshlands, mountains and rivers to freedom. Vrba’s mission: to reveal to the world the truth of the Final Solution, his actions saving over 200,000 lives. Talking to Julia Wheeler
