THE WORDS AND POETRY OF WWII
Literary and Music Festivals Joint Event
Venue: St Peter’s Church
18 September 2021 7:30 pm
This event is an hour and a half long.
For the first time, we are bringing together Budleigh’s two leading festivals in a celebration of words and music to mark 80 years since the Second World War. The leading stage and screen actress, Joanna David, will read from poems and writings of wartime accompanied by the London Ensemble led by Sacha Rattle. Pieces include Stravinsky’s Soldier’s Tale Suite, a sardonic look at the life of a soldier; Khachaturian’s Trio full of rhapsodic passion, nostalgia and bittersweet happiness; Brahms’ 2 Gesnge, Op.91, for the first time arranged for violin, with a humanity that longs for peace, forgiveness and rest, and the last movement of Messiaen’s Quartet for The End of Time written during incarceration in a German POW camp in 1943.
