Lyndall Gordon
Hyacinth Girl: TS Eliot’s Hidden Muse
Venue: Public Hall
18 September 2022 2:00 pm

As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of TS Eliot’s masterpiece The Waste Land, the leading biographer reveals the private life of this very private man, and his life-long love for an American, Emily Hale - the Hyacinth Girl of the poem. Drawing on the dramatic new material of the hundreds of only recently unsealed letters Eliot wrote to Hale, Gordon also offers new insight into Eliot, and the other spirited women who shaped him: Vivienne, the flamboyant wife with whom he shared a private wasteland; Mary Trevelyan, his companion in prayer; and Valerie Fletcher, the young disciple to whom he proposed when his relationship with Emily foundered.
