Why are the covers grey? Why the goddess Persephone? How do they choose which books to bring back to life? Persephone Books published its first title in the spring of 1999 and has been shining a light on ‘lost’ or out-of-print books every year since, most of them interwar novels by women. We’re thrilled to be joined by Francesca Beauman, Persephone MD, to talk about the themes that unite these books, our enduring fascination with Dorothy Whipple and the recent publication of a ‘forgotten literary masterpiece’, Crooked Cross by Sally Carson.
