Write what you know, say the experts, but fiction is all about creating character, plot and location from the imagination. We ask two writers at the top of their game about where they place their stories, why and how they make it authentic.

Polly Clark, whose first novel Larchfield was set in her homeland of Scotland, has now taken on an ambitious challenge setting her latest, Tiger, over two continents and in two voices, not all human.

Alix Nathan’s latest novel, The Warlow Experiment, about self-delusion and obsession, is set in her own home setting of the Welsh Marches but over two hundred years ago.
